In 2018, archaeologists working in Pompeii found a charcoal inscription associated with a room undergoing renovation. The inscription included a date corresponding to October 17. This distinction helps explain why the evidence looks different from building to building. Some structures were damaged by the weight of falling pumice. A City Full of Political Messages

Imagine what that means historically. For centuries, ancient political life had to be reconstructed mainly from literature, official inscriptions and elite sources. At Pompeii, ordinary walls preserve part of the political conversation. A candidate’s name can appear beside advertisements and personal remarks. The result is an unusually direct record of Roman urban life. These inscriptions also challenge the idea that Pompeii was a silent place frozen without human complexity. The Forum Was the Center, But Not the Whole City

The Forum remains one of Pompeii’s most recognizable spaces, but focusing only on it risks turning the city into a collection of monuments. Perhaps nothing associated with Pompeii generates more sensationalism than the famous plaster casts. But the casts are not bodies preserved in volcanic ash.

The technique developed in the nineteenth century after archaeologists noticed cavities in the hardened deposits where organic material had decomposed. By pouring plaster into those voids, excavators could reproduce the shape left by the body at the moment the surrounding material hardened. The casts can preserve extraordinary details. The shape of clothing, the position of the body, sometimes personal objects, and, in certain cases, elements of skeletal structure beneath the plaster. But they must be interpreted carefully, the pose of a victim does not necessarily tell us exactly how the person died. The presence of a body in one layer does not automatically establish a precise cause of death. And not every victim was killed by exactly the same process, the eruption was complex. A political inscription can be associated with a street, a religious object can be connected with a shrine, context multiplies information.

One recent study of environmental evidence in the wider Sarno Plain found signs of rapid reforestation and a decline in human agricultural indicators after the 79 CE eruption, followed by later repopulation and renewed exploitation of the landscape in subsequent centuries. This produces an archaeological paradox. Excavation reveals Pompeii. Exposure also puts Pompeii at risk. The streets look like streets, doorways still frame rooms, the forum remains a public square, the bakery still resembles a bakery, the amphitheater still looks designed for crowds. That familiarity creates an unusual relationship with the ancient world. At many archaeological sites, the past feels distant because only foundations remain. At Pompeii, the distance collapses. You can stand in a house and see the rooms where people once ate, worked and slept. You can read graffiti written by people who never imagined that anyone would study their words two thousand years later. You can see repair work that was interrupted by catastrophe, and you can see the evidence of people attempting to escape. The city does not bring ancient Rome back to life.
